Tragedy struck in Ede, Osun state, when a former student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife simply identified as Christian, allegedly hacked his mother to death with cutlass.
After perpetrating the bizarre act, he was said to have also sat beside the corpse for several hours.
Confirming the incident to the Nigerian Tribune, on Sunday, the acting Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Osun State Police Command, Mr Ajibade Egbedele, said the killing occurred around Oba Laoye area of Ede town.
He stated that the Police received distress call and men of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) swiftly moved to the scene and apprehended the suspect, adding that the suspect had been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) where investigation is ongoing.
However, credible sources in Oba Laoye area where the incident occurred informed our correspondent that the suspect requested for N20,000 from his mother, while the deceased told him she did not have such amount at the time.
Enraged by his mother’s failure to give him the demanded money, Christian was said to have sent his younger sister called Folake on errand to a far place and dragged his mother into one of the rooms in the house, where he murdered her with cutlass.
One of the residents of Oba Laoye area, who pleaded anonymity disclosed that “Christian after killing the poor woman sat with her corpse in the room. Her sister became suspicious when she returned home and met no one.
According to the resident, “she was the one that alerted us when she saw blood coming out of the room from under the door. She tried opening the door but it was firmly locked. Police were later informed and when the door was forced open, Christian was found sitting next to the deceased in a pool of blood.”
He further hinted that the deceased lost her husband 14 years ago and single handedly raised Christian, who recently completed his project and graduated from OAU, including his two other two siblings.
