The European Union (EU) has denied allegations that it has cut humanitarian assistance to Nigeria, following claims by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) that the EU made “massive cuts” in its response to nutrition insecurity in the country.
In a statement released on Monday, the EU Delegation in Nigeria described the claims as “unsubstantiated and inaccurate.”
According to the delegation, the level of humanitarian support provided by the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) in Nigeria during the first half of 2025 is comparable to that provided during the same period in 2024.
“We would like to clarify that this information is unsubstantiated and inaccurate, as the level of EU humanitarian support granted by ECHO in Nigeria in the first half of 2025 has, in fact, been similar to that of the first half of 2024,” the EU Delegation stated.
The delegation further noted that, as in 2024, a significant portion of ECHO’s assistance in Nigeria is dedicated to nutrition, health, and emergency food aid.

“We commend the work carried out by MSF teams, partly funded by the EU, to support malnourished children and their mothers in Nigeria,” the statement continued.
However, the EU emphasized the need for accurate and verified information on critical humanitarian issues.
“The EU Delegation underscores the importance of communicating verified and accurate information on matters of great significance to the Nigerian people.”
The delegation also reiterated its appeal for increased resources from both domestic and international sources to tackle the ongoing nutrition crisis, especially in North-West and North-East Nigeria.
“The EU Delegation reiterates the call made by the EU Ambassador during his 22 July joint press conference with the Honourable Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction and other humanitarian partners, for urgent mobilisation of resources to address the emergency nutrition situation in North-West and North-East Nigeria,” it said.
Finally, the delegation affirmed that the EU remains committed to its financial obligations and overall support within its partnership with Nigeria.
“The EU Delegation reaffirms that the EU is honouring its financial commitments and maintaining its overall level of support across the board in its partnership with Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
