Not fewer than 15 facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been sealed off by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
Out of the 15 facilities, 12 of them are from the built industry, sealed off for one form of violation or another on environmental safety.
The sealing-off of offending facilities in the Federal Capital Territory for various forms of environmental crimes affected facilities in different parts of the FCT like Jabi, Kado, Durumi, Giri, and areas in Kuje and Kubwa.
Addressing newsmen after the exercise, the Director-General of NESREA, Professor Aliyu Jauro, said the facilities were sealed for failing to abate their environmental infractions after a series of compliance concern notices which had been issued to them.
He disclosed that the Agency had followed due process in clamping down on the establishments, adding that, “before enforcement, we embark on compliance monitoring and issue the necessary warnings to defaulting facilities.
“Some of their offenses include not conducting Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit, and these are some of the measures which have been put in place to safeguard the environment.”
Prof. Jauro frowned at the high level of non-compliance in the construction sector, where 12 facilities were among the total of the 15 facilities sealed, pointing out that the refusal of developers to adhere to regulatory provisions had led to the loss of lives and properties.
He promised that the exercise would be replicated in all states of the Federation, advising operators whose activities require compliance with environmental safety to be conscious of environmental safety measures.
The NESREA boss charged Nigerians to familiarize themselves with and abide by environmental regulations and report offenders for the general safety of all.
