Nigerian engineers have been called upon to lead with innovation and sustainability in protecting water resources.
Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ibadan branch, Ibraheem Folarin Bello, gave the charge during the commemoration of the 2025 Water Day in memory of an engineer and water advocate, Late Gbola Tokun. The theme for this year’s event is: ‘Glacier Preservation: Examining The Role Of Glacier In Water Cycles And Resources’.
He stated further that: “Although Nigeria does not have glaciers, the impact of glacial retreat affects water cycles worldwide, with far-reaching consequences on agriculture, rainfall patterns and water security.
“Engineers must to lead with innovation and sustainability in protecting water resources. Doing this will in no small measure protect our agricultural space and ensure we have good water at all time.”
The event, which held in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Oyo State chapter, brought together professionals in the engineering community to highlight the critical role of glaciers in global freshwater systems and the need for sustainable water resource management in the face of climate change.
It also served as a platform for reflection, technical dialogue, and renewed professional commitment toward global water preservation.
