Young Progressive Party (YPP) has called for the need for Nigerian youths to move from the street to the polls as Nigerian leaders are yet to learn a thing or two from the outcome of a nationwide agitation that took the political elites by surprise as the several days of protests sparked a consciousness among the Nigerian youths like never before witnessed in the history of the country.
A statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Egbeola, appealed to Nigerian youths that it is time to move from the streets to the polls by getting politically involved so that youths can collectively stop tyrannical, myopic and incompetent failed politicians from taking over the mantle of leadership at all levels and ultimately bring to an end the very things that take the youths to the streets.
This as it stated that the electoral amended act bill currently before the National Assembly will help bring the needed transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system to ensure Nigerians votes will count.
The statement reads: “#ENDSARS agitation became a rallying point of solidarity among the Nigerian youths to vent their displeasure over the state of the nation.
“The protest became a metaphor for bad governance, high unemployment rate, the worsening state of insecurity and economy, hyperinflation, rising poverty, class oppression and decayed infrastructure that have limited the prosperity of our dynamic, ingenious and innovative youths who have demonstrated time and again that given the right environment, they can thrive and add immense value to the socio-economic and political development of the nation.
“It is common knowledge that nothing has changed one year after the #ENDSARS nationwide protests as the very things some youths paid the ultimate price to correct are still very much our reality today.
“Police brutality seems to have worsened, extortion has been taken to a whole new level, discipline and welfare of Police personnel at its lowest, thereby confirming that the very things that took our youths to the streets have been left unattended to by our insensitive leaders.
“While the events that took place at the Lekki toll gate a year ago remained shrouded in shameless secrecy despite the setting up of a judicial panel to unravel what led to the involvement of the Nigerian Army in a peaceful protest and the subsequent use of live ammunition in dispersing protesters, our so-called leaders are yet to understand that there is a limit to the use of brute force in silencing a legitimate struggle.
“They are yet to learn and imbibe the culture of DIALOGUE in resolving peaceful agitations as the use of force has shown over time that violence will only beget violence.
“The peaceful IPOB agitation now turned into an armed struggle is a vivid example of how not to manage peaceful agitations, hence should serve as a warning to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba and other critical stakeholders that standing in the way of peaceful protests through the use of force aside from being unlawful and a gross violation of the rights of citizens is capable of pushing agitators into seeking alternative means of being heard.
“It’s in lieu of the above that we condemn the constant threats of the Nigerian Police to clamp down on peaceful protesters as it is against the tenets of democracy.
“We call for the immediate release of all protesters arrested in time past and those arrested today at the Lekki toll gate whose only offence was exercising their fundamental rights to protest and commemorate the extrajudicial killing of peaceful protesters at the same spot a year ago.”
