The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), has charged Royal Fathers in Rivers State to remain neutral and impartial in efforts to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Vice Admiral Ibas (rtd), who gave the charge during a meeting with traditional rulers in Rivers State, promised to leverage the indispensable wisdom, influence, and leadership of the traditional institution in the collective efforts to de-escalate tension, foster unity, and build the trust needed among the people of Rivers State.
He expressed regret over the negative impact of the intractable political crisis on the maintenance of law and order in Rivers State.
He emphasised that Rivers State is not only a democratic state but also the heart of the Niger Delta and a major contributor to the nation’s economy. He stressed that the state must not continue to suffer such prolonged instability.
The Sole Administrator reaffirmed his commitment to restoring a sense of pride, honour, and security among residents of the state. He urged traditional rulers, who are vital partners in this pursuit, to refrain from partisanship and instead encourage healthy dialogue to foster peace in their various domains.
“Your Royal Majesties, I recognise that the task ahead cannot be achieved in isolation. The traditional institution is a vital partner in this nation. You are the bridge between government and the people, the custodians of our values, and the mediators in times of conflict.
“Your wisdom, influence, and leadership are indispensable in our collective efforts to de-escalate tensions, foster unity, and rebuild trust among our people.”
The Sole Administrator stated that he remains open to useful suggestions and contributions that will shape the policies and strategies deployed to achieve enduring peace in the state.
Vice Admiral Ibas urged traditional rulers to continue playing their role as peacemakers and advocates for development, stressing the importance of working together with his administration to promote dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation in various communities.
“Let us remind our people that the progress of Rivers State is a shared responsibility and that only unity and cooperation can help us overcome the challenges before us.
“Your Royal Majesties, in my quest for peace and stability, it is imperative that traditional rulers shun all acts of partisanship, whether through their actions, speeches, or body language.”
Vice Admiral Ibas further stated: “The traditional institution must remain a neutral and impartial arbiter, respected by all for its fearlessness and integrity.
“I urge you to distance yourselves, both overtly and covertly, from any acts of cultism, violence, vandalism, or any other form of illegality.
“Traditional rulers must not condone any action that does not promote economic growth. Therefore, you are expected to report any forms of illegality or abuse to the relevant authorities.”
Vice Admiral Ibas emphasised that his administration will not tolerate disorder in any community and stressed the need for traditional rulers to take charge of their domains to ensure peace and stability prevail.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, described the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibas as a well-made decision. He noted that the Sole Administrator has now become the peacemaker needed to address the lingering conflict.
Eze Worlu-Wodo assured that, as traditional rulers, they would work cooperatively with him while remaining true to their responsibility of sustaining efforts to promote peace, stability, and progress in their domains and across Rivers State.
At a similar meeting with Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Rivers State chapter, the Sole Administrator announced that the Federal Government had released the previously withheld local government funds.
He directed them to commence the process of paying the outstanding salaries owed to council workers.
Vice Admiral Ibas acknowledged the hardship faced by local government workers, who had been owed salaries for February and March, describing the situation as most unfortunate. He explained that it was caused by the withholding of monthly allocations to Rivers State following the Supreme Court judgment of 28th February 2025, which annulled the local government council elections of 5th October 2024.
Vice Admiral Ibas said: “I sincerely feel the pain of these workers, many of whom have endured months of financial strain. Let me assure you that the withheld allocations have now been released, and I hereby issue a directive that all necessary steps be taken to ensure that these salaries are paid without further delay.
“As leaders, we must feel the pain of our people and offer them a more positive, inclusive, and transformative leadership. This is the mandate I have accepted, and it is the standard I expect from all of you.
“To this end, I further direct that all Local Government Areas provide my office with wage bills via the office of the Head of Service.
“This will enable me to familiarise myself with the situation and ensure proper handling of such matters. All such submissions should be supported with relevant documents to provide clarity and ensure accuracy.”
