In bid to ensure internal security in the state, the Ekiti State Government on Thursday launched the usage of reflective jackets for motorcycle and tricycle riders across the state.
It be recalled that in the last one year, some killings, kidnappings, and other heinous crimes committed in the state were linked to hoodlums using motorcycles.
Speaking at the event in Ado-Ekiti, the commissioner for Transportation, Kehinde Ajobiewe said the initiative was part of the moves by the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji to ensure the security of lives and property in the state.
According to him, the reflective jackets which he said have been produced with security features are expected to be used by all private and commercial motorcyclists in the state.
Ajobiewe noted that initiative would help the government and other security agencies to track and follow up on criminal incidents involving motorcyclists.
He appealed to the leadership of the riders to enlighten members on the need to embrace and make themselves available for the registration, noting that the policy is in the interest of the riders and the state.
The commissioner added that his ministry would continue to work closely with security agencies to enforce compliance and maintain order within the sector.
On his part, the chairman of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service(EKIRS) Olaniran Olatona said the initiative is a security policy designed by the state government to enhance the safety of the people.
Revealing that the government has expended huge resources on the project, urged the riders to comply with the new directive for the authorities to have the database for security reasons.
“The government remains committed to supporting initiatives that ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens. Law enforcement agencies have been empowered to work closely with bike rider associations to monitor compliance. I urge our security agencies to enforce these measures fairly and justly, ensuring that the rights of law-abiding riders are protected.
“As we launch these safety vests today, let us embrace them as a symbol of progress, responsibility, and security. Let every bike rider wear them with pride, knowing they are part of a safer future for our state. I commend everyone involved in making this initiative a reality and encourage full compliance for the good of all,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the rider, the chairman of the motorcyclist, Kunle Ashaolu commended the state government for the initiative, describing it as long overdue in the state.
He promised that members of the association would be enlightened on the need for them to use the reflective jackets in the interest of their safety and the state.
