Eid-el-Kabir: NEMA partners FRSC, others to avert disasters in Ekiti

Ahead of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration by Muslim faithful across the country, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has partnered with other stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives and property across the 16 Local Government Areas of Ekiti state.

To achieve this, NEMA in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal and State Fire Service, Red Cross and others on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital launched an operation tagged: ‘Safe Eid-el-Kabir’ aimed at ensuring safety on major roads in the state.

The NEMA head of Operations for Ekiti, Ondo and Osun states, Mr Olusegun Afolayan said that the agency came about the programme in view of the usual more vehicular movements along major roads associated with festive periods and to guarantee a timely response in the case of disasters.

He explained that ambulances, firefighter trucks and other equipment would be deployed for the operation to ensure the safety of lives and property of residents in the state.

According to him, NEMA would not shy away from its responsibilities of ensuring timely and quick response to the people in case of emergency, soliciting supports and cooperation of people to the officials of the agency.

Afolayan added that the operation would also be used to carry out massive enlightenment of road users on the need to drive safely and obey all traffic rules to avert accidents.

He said, ” We are here today, to ensure safety on our roads because we know during festive periods, we have many people on the road. In order to prevent loss of lives and ensure the safety of property, NEMA is partnering with other stakeholders and we are hoping to execute this particular operation successfully.

“We are flagging off the maiden edition ‘operation safe it’ in Ekiti state. It is to minimize the impact of disasters especially road traffic accidents. As you know this period, we are in a festive mood and there will be more vehicular movement and in order to address the disaster that might happen, NEMA in collaboration with our partners to ensure the safety of lives on our major roads, we are doing this. Most importantly also, to sensitize people on the need for them to drive safely on the road.

Afolayan maintained that the new NEMA Director-General Mr Mustapha Ahmed is determined to boost the morale of workers with necessary supports that would help in achieving the agency’s core mandates.

“The world keeps evolving and daily emergencies caused by disasters, though unwanted, have become part of our development globally that nations must contend with. Our ability to swiftly respond and address these emergencies, as well as other threats, gives credibility to the government as a working institution,” he said.

Afolayan who noted the imperative of collaboration in disaster management promised to work towards strengthening the bond of partnership with critical stakeholders for efficient disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response in the state.
