Eid-el-Fitr: Islamic clerics urge govt to fix challenges in security, health sectors

As Muslims around the world commemorate the end of the Ramadan fast, the League of Imams and Alfas, Ogun State Council, has called on governments at all levels to address the challenges in the security and health sectors in Nigeria.

The clerics believe that resolving these issues, particularly in light of the recent outbreak of Lassa fever, will foster peaceful coexistence among all citizens.

The League, in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Imam Tajudeen Adewunmi Mustapha, also extended its felicitations to Muslim faithful across the state and globally, saying: “May Allah bless our efforts during the just-concluded month of Ramadan and accept them as acts of worship.”

The League urged the country’s leadership to create people-centred policies and programmes aimed at alleviating the suffering of the masses during this period of economic hardship.

“While we recognise and appreciate the efforts of the state and federal governments in tackling some of the nation’s problems, we must emphasise the urgent need for more people-centred policies and programmes to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

“The economic hardship in the country has pushed many into distress. Government interventions are therefore necessary to restore hope. We urge the government at various levels to prioritise policies that will regulate and stabilise the economy, ensuring the affordability of basic necessities.

“We call on the government to intensify efforts to secure our communities, strengthen law enforcement agencies, and ensure that criminal elements are brought to justice. Investment in healthcare infrastructure is also essential, including the provision of well-equipped hospitals and making medical care affordable for all citizens.

“The recent outbreaks of Lassa fever and other preventable diseases demand urgent attention. We urge the relevant authorities to strengthen public health awareness campaigns, improve sanitation measures, and provide essential medical supplies to curb the spread of such illnesses. Prevention is always better than cure.

“Every citizen has a role to play in building a better society. Islam encourages us to be law-abiding, hardworking, and compassionate towards others. As we celebrate Eid, let us renew our commitment to promoting peace and unity by avoiding actions that incite division, hatred, or violence. In the spirit of the just-concluded Ramadan, let us continue to support the needy and foster a culture of generosity.”

The League added that the end of Ramadan is not solely a time for celebration, but also a moment for deep reflection, gratitude, and renewed dedication to the values of faith, righteousness, and service to humanity.

“Ramadan has instilled in us the virtues of patience, discipline, and empathy for the underprivileged. It is therefore imperative that we uphold these principles beyond this blessed month.

“As we gather with family and friends to mark this special occasion, let us not lose sight of the challenges we face as individuals, as a state, and as a nation. Nigeria is currently grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, inflation, and social instability, which have made life difficult for many,” the statement concluded.
