Egypt opens first International Weapons Expo

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi on Monday opened an International Weapons Exhibition, the first such fair to be held in Cairo.

The three-day Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX 2018) features more than 300 exhibitors showcasing the latest technology, equipment and systems across land, sea and air.

The United States, a major arms supplier to Cairo, has more than 40 companies and organisations taking part in the event, according to a statement by the US embassy in Cairo.

Other major weapons firms from Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, India and Gulf states are also present.

“We the army seek to possess the strength to defeat any aggression on Egyptian soil in trustful cooperation with countries that love security and peace,’’ said Egyptian Defence Minister Mohamed Zaki at the opening ceremony.

Egypt, under al-Sissi, has in recent years sought to boost its military power by purchasing arms from France and Russia.
