Nigerians on social media have started to express mixed reactions to the emergence of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo as the winner of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Edo State.

Tribune Online reports that the election’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruq Adamu Kuta, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, declared that Okpebholo won the election after securing the highest number of votes.

Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election with 291,667 votes, while Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second with 247,274 votes. Meanwhile, Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP)  polled 22,763 votes to come third in the election.

The result of the election has, however, continued to generate diverse reactions from Nigerians on social media.

While some praise the electoral process, describing it as free and fair, others believe irregularities marred the election.

Reacting to the result, a Twitter user, @elvisodese51 wrote, “Congratulations to the winner, free and fair election, PDP lost LP lost, back to the drawing board. Moral lessons: Don’t bite the finger that feeds you 🥕.”

@balogun_ag97551 tweeted, “Sometimes when I see comments like this on X am baffled if mature men don finish for 9ja. They have agents on grand every party, they sign the results sheet, so what again? If you don’t like to lose don’t go into challenges.”

Another user, @Mr_JAGs wrote, “FLASH: EDO NA LAGOS .. #EdoNaLagos.”

Condemning the election, @IamMarkfour wrote, “Election in Nigeria is nothing but a total big shambles.”

“It’s disheartening, honestly! In this modern world 🌎

Open rigging like this can still prevail. No wonder no government and offices never let go of analog.” @Jessigordon2000 opined.

@Emmanulgesture tweeted, “Let the world know🇳🇬 isn’t practicing democracy. What we are practicing can never be referred as democracy. So instead of deceiving ourselves, let’s just stop wasting the nation resources by conducting elections. Because there’s no need for it,and there can never be need for it.”
