The Edo State Police Command was on Saturday caught in a mixture of gallantry and carelessness as operatives of the Command arrested a murder suspect, but accidentally killed a passerby in the process.
The arrested murder suspect, Ebuka Nwaechie, was nabbed for the killing of one Bright Orikose on December 12, 2020.
The Command’s spokesman, Bello Kontongs, said that the arrest of the suspect was made possible by the tip-off from members of the public.
Kontongs, in a statement issued on Saturday, added that while effecting the arrest of the suspect, a policeman fired warning shots to scare off the suspect who had taken to flight, but a passenger in a vehicle travelling along First East Circular Road of Benin City, the area of the operation, was fatally hit by bullets from the policeman’s gun.
The statement reads: “The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the public that on 17/09/2021 at about 18:00 hours acting on credible information, one Ebuka Nwaechie who was involved in the alleged murder of Bright Orikose on 24/12/2020 was sighted along First East Circular Road by St Joseph Catholic Church, Police operatives from the anti-kidnapping and cybercrime unit of the command immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect.
“The Command deeply regret to inform the public that in the process of the arrest, a member of the police team fired a shot in a bid to restrain the fleeing suspect which unfortunately hit one of the occupants of a moving vehicle identified as Moses Adam and injured his thigh.
“The victim was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital where he gave up the ghost. The member of the police team involved in the shooting has been identified and arrested.
“The erring officer will go through an administrative trial that will determine his culpability”.
The Edo Police spokesman added that the Commissioner of Police, CP, Philip Agbadu, was saddened by the unfortunate incident and condoled with the family of the victim.
The CP, he disclosed, had asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of criminal investigation, to carry out a discreet investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Kontongs, the CP assured the general public that he would not hesitate to deal with any erring and overzealous officer, who acts unprofessionally in his duty, just as he appealed to the family of the victim and the general public to remain calm and allow a thorough investigation to be carried out.

Unknowing to her, Mixing bleach with toilet cleaner creates a poisonous gas that can cause adverse health reactions, including death.
“After the mixture, I started feeling a burning sensation in my throat and I had to leave the room because the odour was really bad too,” she said.
