The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) will work closely with the Police and other relevant security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the recent killings of some hunters while in transit in Edo State.
In a statement made available to Defence Correspondents in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the CDS strongly condemned the unfortunate killings, which occurred on 28 March this year, stating that the incident could have been avoided if the appropriate authorities had been notified and involved in ascertaining the identity of the victims.
According to the statement, General Musa extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the families of those who lost their lives. He urged Nigerians not to take the law into their own hands but to always report matters of security to constituted authorities.
The statement further explained that, while assuring Nigerians of the AFN’s commitment to working closely with the Police and other relevant security agencies to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice, the CDS also stressed that all local hunters and vigilante groups must register with the Police, DSS, AFN, or other agencies mandated by law to regulate the possession of firearms. He called on vigilante groups to always defer to the Police for appropriate action.
The CDS also appealed for calm and called on citizens to support the AFN and other security agencies as they continue to perform their constitutional duties diligently.
