For air travellers to Edo North, good times are just around the corner as the state government has concluded plans to site an ultra-modern airport in Uzairue, near Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
Determined to make good his campaign promise during the thank-you tour following his victory in last year’s governorship election, Governor Godwin Obaseki played host to aviation experts and other allied engineers from the Federal Ministry of Aviation to inspect the proposed site.
The aviation team, led by the Director of Aero, Clement Olayinka Awogbami, visited the proposed site for the passenger airport.
Speaking during a visit by the aviation team to the palace of the Ogieneni of Uzairue, His Royal Majesty, Alhaji Imonikhe Omogbai, the deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, reiterated the determination of the state government to forge ahead with the plan to construct the passenger airport in Edo North.
Represented by his Chief of staff, Mr Jimoh Ijegbai, Shaibu defended the decision to go ahead with the project, the second in the state after Benin Airport, explaining that the airport project had lots of economic potentials and would be an usher in positive multiplier effects in the overall development of the state in particular and the country at large.
The deputy governor said that airports remained gateways for the socio-economic development of any nation, noting that the state was looking forward to an airport that would support its massive agro development potential.
He said: “The decision to continue with the airport project to be located in Edo North Senatorial district was made by the state’s joint committee, which evaluated and placed priority on it due to the vast economic potential in the area. Our decisions are always based on the economic value and benefits to our people.”
He added that a lot of verifiable paperwork had commenced on the airport project, which would have the approval of the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), after the inspection and prompt approval with a view to ensuring its immediate takeoff and completion.
Shaibu explained that after a thorough evaluation, the choice of the Airport location in Jattu/Okpella, Uzairue community was unanimous as it would complement the industrial and agro-processing factories in the area with access to a good road network.
The Uzairue community Development Chairman, Alhaji Saliu Egele who spoke on behalf of the monarch noted that the government’s efforts to build an airport in Edo North was timely and a very welcome development as it will ease transportation.
Awogbami remarked that the team came to gather raw data which would be deliberated on in its findings and come up with a good report, adding that a survey showed that there were no encumbrances or natural hazards such as rivers, high tension power and high mountains.
