Edo deputy speaker calls for more women participation in politics

The Deputy Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Hon Maria Edeko, has called for the involvement of more women professionals in active politics.

Edeko made the call in Benin during a panel discussion at the University of Benin Inaugural Women’s Leadership Conference.

The deputy speaker, who was one of the panelists in a topic ‘Women Leading the Way: Stories of Resilience and Success’, said the call was imperative towards addressing women underrepresentation in leadership.

According to the deputy Speaker, the bulk of women in politics are illiterate, making it difficult to aspire for leadership positions.

Edeko, who shared her journey from a classroom teacher to a parliamentarian in Nigeria, bemoaned women’s lack of interest in politics.

She encouraged women to come out and take their rightful place in leadership and making a difference.

“Leadership is not just about occupying a position, but about leaving a lasting legacy.

“I have always been driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of others, and I believe that is what true leadership is about,” she said.

The deputy speaker, however, attributed her success to good background, passion and mentorship.

Mrs. Edeko, a lawyer and teacher by profession, noted that her experience in the classroom has taught her the importance of doing things in accordance with the rules of law.

“As a leader, it is essential to understand the rules and work within them to achieve your goals,” she added.

She urged leaders to focus on making a positive impact, saying “sometimes, you could be up to practice, but nobody will remember who was the vice chairperson in your cabinet.

“Your name will be remembered, so I want to address the huge problem we have,” she said.
