The wife of the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mrs. Osaretin Idahosa, has paid over ₦4 million in medical bills for patients at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Mrs. Idahosa explained that the gesture was inspired by the Yuletide season and aimed to provide hope and a sense of belonging to the beneficiaries, particularly nursing mothers. She noted that the gesture was a way of spreading goodwill during the festive period.

One of the most touching stories was that of Amenze Ikponmwosa, a nursing mother who had been abandoned by her husband after giving birth to twins. Mrs. Idahosa not only covered Ikponmwosa’s bill of ₦1.2 million but also offered a financial token to help her start a business.

The Deputy Governor’s wife, who was received by the hospital’s management, including Chief Medical Director Prof. Darlington Obaseki, commended the medical staff for their hospitable care of patients.

Additionally, Mrs. Idahosa distributed gift items to nursing mothers and elderly patients to brighten their holiday celebrations.

During the visit, Dr. Ogoh Efeturi, Senior Registrar of the Paediatrics Department, highlighted the condition of some infants in the special care baby unit, some weighing as little as 0.8kg. He explained that these babies would require special care for up to 26 weeks to stabilize their health.

Mrs. Idahosa reassured the hospital management of the current administration’s dedication to improving the living standards of the people.

In appreciation, Prof. Obaseki and Dr. Esohe Ogboghodo, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee on Research and Ethics, both commended Mrs. Idahosa for her selfless act, with Dr. Ogboghodo noting that her gesture had rekindled hope for women in line with the state’s “New Edo Rising” vision.
