The Senate, on Wednesday, declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant following his election as Governor of Edo State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the declaration during a valedictory session held in honour of Okpebholo and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise elections promptly to fill the vacant seat.
During the session, Akpabio commended Okpebholo for his contributions to the 10th Senate and encouraged him to carry forward his legacy of impactful leadership as governor.
In an emotional address, Okpebholo reflected on his time in the Senate, expressing gratitude to his colleagues and recounting the valuable support he received during his campaign for governorship.
“Distinguished colleagues, this is quite emotional for me,” he said. “From the moment I joined this 10th Senate in June 2023, every moment at the red chambers has remained especially memorable.
“Barely one year in the Senate, I left to pursue the dream of becoming governor. Today I am Governor of Edo State.”
He extended special appreciation to Senate President Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, among others, for their guidance and encouragement.
“My involvement in the business of legislation has helped to drive my passion for good governance, particularly in infrastructure development, security, education, and health, in my new role as governor,” Okpebholo added.
He concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgement of his colleagues, noting, “We worked together, we gained successes together, and we must always be proud of each other wherever.”
