The Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) Bishara Hausa Section Kano has secured the release of two convicted inmates, Musa Aminu and Isah Umar, who were convicted for stealing pepper and suya beans, from the Wudil Correctional Service.
However, the released inmates, residents of Ladin Makole and Mariri, were granted release after the ECWA had paid their fines.
Making this known when speaking with the press, the Secretary of the ECWA Bishara Hausa Section Kano, Elder Apagu Wabba, stated that the section Kano’s prison decongestion efforts were part of its annual tradition.
According to him, “The duo who were convicted for stealing pepper and suya beans were overwhelmed with emotion as they expressed their gratitude to the organisation.”
He added that the ECWA Hausa Section Kano periodically visits correctional centres to pay fines for convicted inmates, irrespective of their religion or tribes.
Elder Wabba emphasised that the selfless act aims to complement the government’s efforts in reducing congestion in correctional centres.
He also hinted that the two inmates’ transformation serves as a testament to the power of kindness and second chances.
Elder Wabba then said that the organisation’s commitment to prison decongestion and rehabilitation serves as a shining example for philanthropists and NGOs to follow.
“By working together, we can create a more compassionate society that gives individuals a chance to redeem themselves.”
In their appreciation to the ECWA’s gesture, Musa Aminu and Isah Umar promised to turn over a new leaf and become better persons.
However, in their heartfelt plea, they urged others engaging in theft to repent and seek a more productive path.
