All eyes turn to the ancient town of Iba in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State as the Eburu of Ibaland, Oba Prof. Adekunle Adeogun Oyedeji II, prepares to host the fifth edition of the Oriki Yoruba Cultural Festival. Organized under the auspices of the Eburu Adekunle Yoruba Cultural Renaissance, the festival continues its mission of celebrating the rich heritage of the Yoruba people.
Since its inception in 2020, Oba Adekunle Adeogun has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to revitalizing Yoruba culture. Through meticulous efforts, he has mobilized resources to preserve the traditions, history, and values of the Yoruba race, with a special focus on the ancient but fading art of Oriki (Yoruba praise poetry).
Each year, Iba becomes a cultural hub as enthusiasts, historians, academics, traditional rulers, poets, and artists gather to celebrate Yoruba heritage. The serene town, nestled between Inisa and Ikirun in Osun State, provides a welcoming backdrop for this grand occasion. The festival has evolved from an exclusive showcase of established acts to a platform for budding talents, ensuring that the legacy of Yoruba heroes is preserved and celebrated.
Beyond artistic expression, the Oriki Yoruba Festival also highlights Iba’s untapped tourism potential, showcasing its breathtaking landscapes, mountains, flora, and fauna. This fusion of culture and nature creates an unforgettable experience for attendees.
This year’s festival, slated for December 13–14, 2024, promises to continue the tradition of excellence. Activities will kick off with a Mountaineering Day on Friday, December 13. Guests are encouraged to arrive on Thursday, December 12, to enjoy the warm hospitality of Iba’s residents.
A significant highlight of the event will be the annual lecture, which has previously featured eminent scholars such as Dr. Tunde Adegbola, Prof. Rom Kalilu, Prof. Siyan Oyefeso, Prof. Gbemi Adeoti, and Prof. Duro Adeleke. This year, the lecture will be delivered by Prof. Olukoya Ogen, Director of the UNESCO UNIOSUN Project on Cultural Diversity, at the Iyaniwura Palace in Iba on Saturday, December 14.
As part of the festival’s tradition, cultural icons will be honored for their contributions to Yoruba art and culture. This year, veteran poet Pa Olatunbosun Oladapo, popularly known as “Odidere Ayekooto,” will join an illustrious list of past honorees, including Pa Alabi Ogundepo, Baba Wande, Muraina Oyelami, Araba Yemi Elebuibon, and Kola Oyewo.
The Oriki Yoruba Festival continues to blend education, entertainment, and cultural pride, attracting guests from across Nigeria and beyond. Whether you’re a lover of Yoruba culture or an explorer seeking new experiences, Iba town is the place to be this December for a truly enriching and festive Yuletide celebration.
