Ebrahim Raisi: Seven quick facts about late Iranian President

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, on Sunday, died after his helicopter crashed amid heavy fog in northern Iran.

Rescuers on Monday found the helicopter that was carrying the Iranian President, as well as the country’s foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and other senior officials after it crashed in the mountainous northwest reaches of Iran.

1. Born 14 December 1960 in Mashhad, an important religious centre for the Twelver Shiʿah, Ebrahim Raisi began studying at the Qom religious seminary at the age of 15.

2. Raisi passed his primary education inJavadiyeh school“; then started studying in the Hawza (Islamic seminary). In 1975, he went toAyatollah Boroujerdi Schoolto continue his education in Qom Seminary.

3. He became attorney general in 2014 for two years when he was appointed by Khamenei to lead the Astan Quds Razavi.

4. The late Iranian President was sometimes referred to as theButcher of Tehran,due to his involvement in the mass execution of political prisoners in 1988.

5. He became chairman of Astan Quds Razavi on 7 March 2016 after the death of his predecessor Abbas Vaez-Tabasi, a position which lasted for three years.

6. He became president in 2021 amid low voter turnout and wide disqualification of reformist and moderate candidates.

7. Raisi was married to Jamileh Alamolhoda, daughter of Mashhad Friday Prayers Imam, Ahmad Alamolhoda, and blessed with two children and grandchildren.
