I want to know if it is okay for me to eat oranges at night. I don’t know if this will give me an upset stomach

Tracy (by SMS)

Yes, eating oranges at night is generally safe and can offer nutritional benefits, but moderation and timing are important to avoid sleep or digestive issues. Oranges are rich in vitamin C, fibre, potassium, and antioxidants, which support immune function, skin health, and digestion even during nighttime hours.

Eating an orange before bed can help maintain hydration, promote muscle relaxation, and may even support a sense of calm due to the light sweetness and aroma. The fibre content also aids digestion and can help you feel satiated, potentially reducing late-night cravings. Oranges are mildly acidic (pH 3–4) and contain natural sugars, which can sometimes cause acid reflux, heartburn, or digestive discomfort, especially if eaten right before lying down.

The high vitamin C content may also have a mild stimulating effect in some individuals, potentially affecting sleep if consumed in large quantities close to bedtime  People with GERD, sensitive digestion, or blood sugar concerns should be cautious and may prefer to eat oranges earlier in the evening or in smaller portions Moderation is key: One medium orange is usually safe for most people Timing matters: Eat at least an hour before bed to reduce the risk of acid reflux or sleep disruption. Pair with other foods: Combining with a small protein or fat source can help stabilise blood sugar and slow sugar absorption

Listen to your body: If you notice discomfort or sleep issues, adjust portion size or timing accordingly. For most healthy individuals, eating an orange at night can be a nutritious and hydrating snack that supports digestion, skin health, and immune function. However, those prone to acid reflux, heartburn, or sleep disturbances should consume them in moderation and avoid eating immediately before lying down.
