DRTS warns Abuja residents against buying number plates from touts

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a stern warning to motorists against purchasing vehicle number plates from touts operating in Abuja.

The warning comes amid a reported scarcity of number plates in the FCT, which the DRTS attributed to irregular and insufficient supply from the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Plant. The Directorate, however, assured residents that efforts are being made to address the shortage.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, the Director of DRTS, Dr Abdulateef Bello, raised alarm over the activities of fraudsters who are impersonating officials of the Directorate to defraud unsuspecting vehicle owners.

“We wish to draw the attention of the motoring public to the activities of fraudsters impersonating DRTS officials in the attempt to take advantage of the situation to exploit vehicle owners,” the statement read.

Dr Bello emphasised that the DRTS disassociates itself from all illegal dealings and cautioned the public against engaging with anyone claiming to offer number plates outside the Directorate’s official self-service portal at https://selfservice.fctevreg.com.

He further noted that in line with the Directorate’s commitment to transparency, the approved costs for number plates and related services are publicly listed on the DRTS website and other official communication channels.

“The Directorate therefore encourages the public to stick and insist on the stipulated prices,” he said.

To clamp down on the fraudulent practices, the DRTS disclosed that it is working closely with security agencies to identify and prosecute those involved in impersonation and illegal sales of number plates.

Members of the public have been urged to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the DRTS management.

“The DRTS remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering transparent, efficient, and accountable services to the motoring public,” Dr Bello added.
