Driver docked for allegedly assaulting motorcyclist

A 37-year-old driver, Chukwudi Ukaegbu; on Friday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for allegedly beating up a motorcyclist.

The defendant, whose residential address was not disclosed in court, is facing a charge of assault.

Ukaegbu, however, denied committing the offence and was admitted to a bail of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate, Mr J.A. Adegun, directed that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government, (LASG).

The prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 23 at Ogba, Lagos.

He said that the defendant assaulted one Mr Anthony Ukaegbu by hitting his nose with a head-butt and also punched him.

The prosecutor said, “The complainant was riding his motorcycle when the defendant stopped him.

“The defendant claimed that the complainant used his motorcycle to hit his bus.

“He dragged the complainant down from his motorcycle and gave him head-butts severally on his nose which caused him harm.’’

The prosecutor said that the defendant also dragged the complainant by his clothing which caused severe injuries to the complainant’s neck.

“The defendant was handed over to the police following his actions,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor said that the offence violated Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates three years’ imprisonment for assault.

The case was adjourned until July 18 for mention.
