A lecturer in the Department of Accounting, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Ahmed Bello Dogarawa, has cautioned against all forms of child abuse, saying it is against the teaching and norms of Islam.
Prof. Dogarawa gave the charge on Monday while delivering a lecture with the theme: “Child Rights and Abuse in Islamic Perspective”, on the occasion of the Annual Ramadan lecture organized by the Sabil Charitable International Organization (SCIO) in Kaduna.
He stressed the various forms of child abuse including physical, mental, sexual and negligent of a child, found today is never permitted in Islam, explaining there are many verses of the Quran that discusses child abuse, and some part of the Hadith strongly warned against it.
The university Don frowned that many families are not living up to their responsibilities, a situation he said had contributed to many of the societal challenges witnessed today.
“There is a lot of child abuse in the society especially issue that has to do with negligence, parents giving birth to children and neglect them, they don’t train, educate and promote upbringing or parental care.
“There are serious issues with regard to children’s rights. We have got it wrong simply because we have decided not to follow the teachings of Islam. We are deceived by what we see on television, what we read, we claim that we are struggling for livelihood and we are not taking care of the children,” he said.
He added, “until we go back to our family and look at family structure, and how Islam wants our family to be, if we don’t correct that, we will continue to have this problem of child abuse and the problem of not giving children their due right.”
Earlier in her welcome address, the President of the SCIO, Halimatu Sadiya Abdu, said it is the 12th Annual Ramadan lecture while explaining that the programme has always aimed at improving the quality of life of the people spiritually, socially, economically and morally.
She also noted that the programme aims at equipping people with sound moral values that are essential for peaceful co-existence and beneficial to society at large.
“Today’s theme of the lecture is child rights and abuse from an Islamic perspective. It is my ardent prayer that the topic will be of benefit to all of us,” she said.
