The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that remittances from Nigerians abroad exceeded $20 billion in 2024, surpassing foreign direct investment.
Dabiri-Erewa made this known while briefing the media ahead of the 2025 National Diaspora Day (NDD) and the 3rd National Diaspora Merit Awards (NDMA), scheduled to hold from 25 to 26 July 2025 in Abuja.
She noted that Diasporans are among Nigeria’s greatest exports, yet remain one of the country’s most underutilised assets for national development.
She added that in 2024 alone, remittances from Nigerians abroad exceeded $20 billion, surpassing foreign direct investment.
Dabiri-Erewa also pointed out that beyond remittances, the diaspora community possesses an “armoury of knowledge, skills, networks, and goodwill; resources which, if strategically engaged, can catalyse transformative development across all regions of our country.”
The 2025 NDD and NDMA will provide a platform for Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to national development. Dr Dabiri-Erewa stated that the event will feature thematic sessions, panel discussions, youth mentorship programmes, strategic partnership dialogues, networking opportunities, and the National Diaspora Merit Awards.
Registration is currently open for both physical and virtual participation. Interested individuals can visit (link unavailable) to register.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support for diaspora engagement under his administration. She also appreciated the support of government agencies, public and private sector organisations, and the media for their collaboration.
The NiDCOM boss invited all Nigerians to participate in the 2025 NDD and NDMA, saying, “Let this event be remembered not merely for its banners and accolades, but for the bridges it builds and the futures it unlocks.”
