Ahead of Wednesday’s official date for the commencement of Presidential and National Assembly election campaigns, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee held a meeting on Monday.

Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Barrister Felix Morka, assured party faithful that the APC would soon unveil a detailed campaign programme.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines, August 19, 2026, is the official date for the commencement of campaigns by candidates for Presidential and National Assembly offices, with the elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.

Campaigns for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly seats are scheduled to commence on September 9, 2026, while the elections have been fixed for February 6, 2027.

The APC spokesperson maintained that the party would conduct thorough consultations before proceeding with its national campaign.

He said, “August 19 is the date fixed by INEC for all parties to start the Presidential and National Assembly campaign. There is no law that says we must start on that day. The only thing is that no political party is permitted to start ahead of the day.

“The party is coming up with a comprehensive and well-thought-out nationwide campaign schedule after necessary consultation with critical stakeholders and affected candidates.

“There is no law that says we must start on Wednesday.”
