THE National Youth Council of Nigeria has thrown its weight behind the agitation for Local Government autonomy being canvassed by the National Association of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and other interest groups.
President of NYCN, Murtala Garba, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja said as part of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration, the leadership of the Council was fully ready to mobilise its members across the 774 local government areas in Nigeria in support of autonomy for the grassroots administration.
He said the Council would also during the Democracy Day formally unveil its political agenda for 2017 upto 2023.
The statement signed by Mr Gambo Jagindi, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Murtala Garba, NYCN President, said NYCN would launch its campaign in support of Local Government Autonomy during the 4th Nigeria Youth Democracy Lecture and Day of Honour 2017.
Garba, added that the Council would mobilise its members for solidarity rally on May 30, for this purpose, explaining that the lecture by NYCN is to assess the state of democracy in Nigeria.
He said the event was geared towards articulating an agenda for the youths to contribute meaningfully towards the development and sustenance of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
According to him, the youths could only make any meaningful contribution if they were being constantly supported by government and the society at large, saying however, that the youths had enjoyed the support of well meaning Nigerians, politicians and corporate organisations in this regard.
He said the NYCN, in recognition of this gesture, would use the event to honour this group of persons to encourage them to do more for Nigerian youths thereby contributing to the country’s development.
