Democracy Day not worth celebrating, cleric tells Nigerian leaders

A religious cleric, Sheik Malam Isma’il, has advised elected leaders at all levels to cancel annual Democracy Day celebrations and one-year anniversary events, citing the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians.

The chief Imam of Gida Dudu housing estate in Dutse, Jigawa, made this assertion in his sermon, stating that democracy and votes cast have not added value to people’s lives.

Sheik Abdulmalik Abdullahi criticised leaders for implementing policies that worsen the suffering of citizens, such as fuel subsidy removal, increased tuition fees, and high pilgrimage prices. He highlighted the devastating effects of poverty, hunger, and inflation, which have ravaged the country, and urged leaders to find lasting solutions to the economic, social, and security crises.

The cleric questioned the leaders’ ability to implement policies that throw citizens into hardship without providing quick solutions.

He emphasised that leaders who lack ideas and knowledge to address problems do not deserve to lead.

Sheik Abdulmalik called on Nigerians to be patient, prayerful, and law-abiding, trusting in God’s intervention and mercy.

He urged leaders to fear God and be fair and just to the people, seeking solutions to the persisting crises.

This sermon highlights the growing discontent among Nigerians regarding the country’s leadership and economic conditions.
