The Delta State Government, through the Taskforce on Anti-Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration, headed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, is equipping secondary schools across the state to take an active role in preventing human trafficking through the School Anti-Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project (STEAP), in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
Speaking during the kick-off on Monday and Tuesday in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, the Benin Zonal Commander, NAPTIP, Mr. Sam Offiah, who inaugurated the Anti-trafficking and Violence Against Persons Vanguard, said the initiatives aim to transform schools into hubs of knowledge and prevention.

“These peer education groups are central to a whole-of-community approach that actively involves students, teachers, parents, and relevant stakeholders in reducing trafficking risks among school-age children,” he said.
He stated further that the Delta State Government, in partnership with NAPTIP, has formally inaugurated 30 student vanguards in Abraka Grammar School and another 30 students in Erho Secondary School, both in Abraka, who will now serve as the agency’s ambassadors in the schools.
According to Offiah, the target is to cover 50 secondary schools in Delta State within a given space of time.
He, however, stated that 10 secondary schools would be covered this week, beginning with the kick-off of the two schools in Abraka.
On her part, Mrs. Ijeoma Nwanze, head of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Ministry of Justice, and the Secretary, Delta State Taskforce on Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration said the taskforce was set up by the Delta State Government to fight against and reduce the scourge in the state, adding that the Vanguard Club would advocate in schools across the state.
“Apart from setting up a task force on anti-human trafficking, we now have the Delta State Law Against Trafficking in Persons, known as the Delta State Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Law 2024, that shows that the issue of trafficking is very passionate in the heart of the governor, just as she advised the students to speak out on the issue of human trafficking in their environment,” she said.
