As victims of ocean surge at Constain community in Ugborodo, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State rue the devastating effects, the state government has promised to deploy relief materials to the affected victims.
Recall that a week-long ocean surge climaxed last Sunday morning, leaving behind a tale of woes as houses, canoes, electric poles, among household properties were swept away from the coastal community.
Speaking to our correspondent on Tuesday from Constain via a phone call, the chairman of the community, Mr Segun Ebiejuara, Folasade Akingboye, and Oreofe Rege, lamented the situation the affected folks, most of the Ilaje stock, were going through as scores of the people have been rendered homeless.
“The Ocean surge swept away our homes. We no longer have where to lay our heads. We’ve been unable to sleep.
“Some of our kids are still in the bush where they fled for safety. No food to eat. We’re stranded,” Akingbola lamented.
Chairman of the community, Mr Ebiejuara, also decried the predicament of his people, whom, he reiterated, the natural elements had buffeted for over one week.
“My people are passing through suffering. As the chairman, I don’t even know what to do, I’m confused because much pressure is on me.
“We can’t go to work to look for money to eat. We can’t go anywhere because there’s nowhere to go. We need help,” he pleaded.
In live video footage from Mr Pius Regele, a youth leader in charge of welfare, some of the displaced folks were seen drying in the sun mattresses and other household items retrieved from the deluge.
Meanwhile, our correspondent, late Tuesday, learnt that the state government had visited the area with some officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for an on-the-spot assessment of the destruction.
Commissioner for Special Duties and Bureau, Mr Johnbull Edama, who was at the community with the directors of NEMA and SEMA, Mallam Dahiru Yusuf and Mr Friday, during a town hall meeting with the people, conveyed the empathy of the government to the people.
“The governor asked me to sympathize with you. The incident came to our knowledge on Sunday evening and we immediately swung into action and by Tuesday we’re here,” he enthused.
Mr Johnbull promised that NEMA and SEMA would work together to cushion the effects of the natural disaster, adding that they would act as quickly as possible to do the needful.
