Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has described the agitation for a new state for the South-East region as a necessity.

According to the governor, the creation of a sixth state will correct the imbalance the region has faced in the country.

Nwifuru disclosed this to journalists at the end of the State Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Council Chambers, New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki.

The governor said, “Yes, I would like another state to be created in the South-East because it is a necessity for the region to get another state to address the imbalance we have experienced.”

Speaking on reports that Ebonyi might lose three local government areas to the new state, Nwifuru said, “I am no longer in the legislature; I am now in the executive. I have not seen any document, and I cannot respond to a document I have not seen.”

Commenting on the growing trend of people taking to social media to insult stakeholders of the state, the governor said, “People are cashing out; our youths are venturing into insulting their elders, but they should understand the traditional consequences of insulting their elders,” he noted.
