In a significant legal development concerning a royal succession dispute, the Federal High Court in Lagos has granted an interim injunction restraining security agencies and prominent individuals, including Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, from arresting or harassing Prince Abiola Olojo Kosoko, the Oloja-Elect of Lagos.
The order, issued by Justice Musa Kakaki, provides a temporary reprieve for Prince Kosoko, who alleged he had been subjected to intimidation and threats since his emergence as the Oloja-Elect.
The injunction will remain in effect pending the resolution of a substantive lawsuit filed by Kosoko’s legal team, led by Chief A.S. Abimbola.
The court’s decision specifically targets several key respondents in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/0426/2025.
Besides the Oba of Lagos, those named include the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Adamu Bello Muhammed, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Mariam Ogunmolasuyi, and Inspector Ebere.
Justice Kakaki’s ruling emphasised the paramount importance of protecting constitutional rights, stating that they must not be infringed upon, especially during an ongoing legal dispute over a traditional leadership position.
The interim order prevents the respondents and their agents from “harassing, attempting to arrest, inviting, detaining, or unlawfully interfering with or violating” Prince Kosoko’s fundamental rights.
The case stemmed from a conflict over the Oloja of Lagos chieftaincy title, a crucial position within the Lagos royal hierarchy.
Prince Kosoko, a descendant of the Kosoko royal family, claimed certain groups, allegedly with the backing of security agencies, were attempting to undermine his position and forcefully prevent his recognition.
The court has adjourned the matter to Thursday, 11 September 2025, for the motion on notice to be heard.
