The police in Ebonyi State have arraigned a 61-year-old man for allegedly killing his elder brother’s wife.

The man, identified as Moses Nweze, allegedly killed Mrs. Mary Nwomege, who is said to be his brother’s wife, on February 24, 2024.

He was arraigned at an Abakaliki Magistrate Court on Monday by the police following his arrest.

During the arraignment, the Counsel to the Police, Eze Chinagorom, told the court that the suspect used an axe to strike Mrs Nwomege on the head from behind while she was cooking.

The charge against him, according to court records, reads: “That you, Moses Nweze ‘m’, on the 24th day of February 2024, at Edukwu Ndegazu in Ikwo Local Government Area within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court, unlawfully caused the death of one Mary Nwomege ‘f’ by hitting her with an iron axe.”

The police noted that the suspect, by the action, committed an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.

After the charges were read to the suspect, the Presiding Magistrate, Lilian Ogodo, said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

She therefore remanded the accused at the Abakaliki Correctional Service and urged that the case file be transmitted to the Ministry of Justice for further action.

Speaking to our reporter, the daughter of the victim, Chinasa Nwomege, narrated how her uncle killed her mother.

“I was inside the house, and suddenly I heard the voice of my mother breathing like someone who is in pain.”

“So I rushed out to know what was wrong with her, and I saw my uncle Moses hitting my mother on the head, so I raised an alarm, and people came and helped me take my mother to the hospital.”

She said she and other members of the family want justice for her slain mother.
