Justice Yetunde Rukayat Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court, sitting in Ikeja, has adjourned further hearing in the suit filed by the removed Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, against the House and its new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, to March 7.
Obasa had approached the court to challenge his removal by the lawmakers on Jan. 13, describing it as unlawful, especially since the act was carried out while the House was on recess.
In the application dated February 12, 2025, filed by his lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, the claimant sought an order of the court declaring that the action could not stand, asserting that he remained the Speaker.

He claimed that the lawmakers erred in removing him while the state’s legislative arm was in recess.
At the resumed hearing on Friday, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Tayo Oyetibo, led a team including Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Bimbo Akeredolu, and other lawyers representing Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, led Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Muiz Banire, and other counsel representing the 36 lawmakers, while Senior Advocates Olu Daramola and Dada Awosika represented other parties seeking to be joined in the suit.
Addressing journalists after the court session, the Speaker described the plenary session held by the removed Speaker as a farce and a show of shame.
She said, “I think, to me, that was just a show of shame. Because in our job, we have numbers that form a quorum. So if you are sitting with three or four members, you’re only doing a tea job.”
