Three people, including a couple, were confirmed dead in an accident which occurred in Oke Aro area of Akure, along Itagbanja axis of Idanre road in Akure South local government area of Ondo state.
The three persons were said to have lost their lives when the commercial tricycle driver and a tipper rammed into each other, killing the couple instantly while the driver died on his way to the hospital.
According to an eyewitness, the accident was caused by reckless driving on the part of both drivers who rammed into each other, leading to the death of the three occupants of the tricycle.
It took the intervention of the residents of the area to remove the remains of the deceased from the tricycle while the tipper lorry was abandoned by the driver.
The witness said the driver abandoned the lorry to avoid the wrath of the irate mob who threatened to kill him, but said the driver later reported himself at the B Division Police Station in Oke Aro area of the state capital.
It was gathered that some youths of the area who converged on the scene of the incident later organized themselves and matched to the Police station, demanding justice for the victims, and hurling stones at the station.
The police, however, dispersed the protesting youths with tear gas while some members of the tricycle union were arrested and the tricycle impounded by the security operatives in the area.
It was learnt the remains of the victims were deposited at the morgue while the police said investigation has commenced into the incident.
The spokesperson of the state police command, Olusola Ayanlade, who confirmed the incident, said the truck driver who reported the incident has been in police custody and said the command has begun an investigation into the matter.
