Lady Okafor was elected unopposed by delegates of the party who participated in the indirect primary elections of the party held in Awka.
The election which was observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) witnessed a large turnout of party faithful drawn from the 21 local government areas of the state.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the election, Lady Okafor said she was motivated to contest the election to represent the interest of women at the nation’s upper legislative chamber.
While decrying low level of women participation in politics, she promised to embark on massive mobilisation of women to enable them take their rightful place in the nation’s polity.

”I have been doing a lot to encourage women to participate in politics. In my party, we even offered them free tickets, but they are not showing enough interest. I am worried that women are lagging behind in politics, that is why I presented myself to fight for their liberation through legislation”
The party’s Senatorial Flag bearer said she had been touching lives through her NGO anchored on supporting indigent students to access education, pledging to consolidate on the project if given the mandate to occupy the seat.
According to her, women and youth empowerment will form the cardinal focus of her representation so as to liberate them from the shackles of ignorance and poverty militating against their progress.
While she described the party as a strong one with visible presence in all the states, she added that she decided to join the senatorial race to make a statement and spring a surprise.
