The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has reiterated the importance of consent in marriage, stressing that being married does not equal automatic or unquestioned access to a partner’s body.
In a post made on its official X page, the agency emphasised that marital intimacy in a healthy marriage must be a shared and willing choice, not an obligation or a marital duty imposed on either partner.
“Consent doesn’t stop at the wedding altar,” the DSVA stated. “In a healthy marriage, intimacy is a shared choice, not an obligation. Respecting your partner’s ‘yes’ or ‘no’ builds trust, love, and safety.”
The Lagos agency while speaking on marital intimacy also clarified that consent must be clear and enthusiastic.
“For your information: silence is NO, reluctance is NO,” it added.
According to the DSVA, true consent follows the F.R.I.E.S principle, it must be Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, and Specific.
