EducationThe Committee of Public Relation and Information Officers of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (COPRECOEN) has lent its voice to the call for the creation of a separate commission for teacher education.
Chairman of the committee, Mr Bola Adesina, made the call recently in his address at the 21st Annual General Meeting of the body, hosted by the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo.
He said the current status of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) made it difficult to support degree-awarding status for colleges of education.
A separate commission for teacher education, he noted, would enable colleges of education run degree programmes independently and improve quality of teacher education in colleges of education and universities.
Adesina disclosed that an approval had been granted for the creation of public relations directorate in all colleges of education in Nigeria, and that some institutions had already started implementation.
He, therefore, urged the NCCE to help institutionalise the directorate in all colleges across the country, including state-owned ones.
One way of fast-tracking this, he noted, is to make the creation of the directorate one of the items on the quality control checklist during accreditation exercise.
He thanked the provost and management of the Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo for hosting the conference. He also sympathised with the provost on the crisis that led to the suspension of academic activities on the campus, and prayed for peace to return to the college, and for God to grant the provost the wisdom to overcome the challenges.
