CNG buses: NAPS, NAUS, NANCES hail NANS sharing formula

The joint leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), and the National Association of University Students (NAUS), have declared a vote of confidence in the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian students, NANS for the distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses recently given to NANS by the federal government.

The student leaders commend the current administration of NANS fairness in distribution of the CNG buses and other palliatives within organs and structures of NANS.

In a statement jointly signed by NAPS National President, Ridwan Munirudeen, NANCES National President, Samuel Eegunjobi, and NAUS National President, Josiah Peter on Wednesday, the student leaders noted that the interest of Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education students were captured in the distribution of the buses.

The student leaders in the statement however appealed to the aggrieved members of NANS to embrace peace and also focus on how to manage buses distributed to their secretariat and zones.

The trio leaders further stated that the structure of NANS is beyond the National Executive and senate arms adding that sister bodies including NAPS, NAUS, and NANCES are part of the NANS structure.

“Fraternal greetings from the joint leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) and the National Association of University Students (NAUS), the trio association representing the interest of Polytechnic, University and College of Education students in Nigeria and in the diaspora.

“In response to the recent petition alleging unequal distribution of CNG buses among the student community, we would like to set the record straight that; The structures of NANS are beyond only National Executives and Senate Arm. It’s imperative to know that sister bodies such as NAPS, NAUS, and NANCES are also structures of NANS while Six (6) Zonal Coordinators (representing each zone) and 37 JCC Chairmen (representing each state including FCT) are also organs of NANS.

“That the sharing formula of the CNG buses was just and fair to all structures and organs of NANS. It will interest the public to know that interest of Polytechnics, Universities, and Colleges of Education was captured in the sharing formula, one CNG bus each was given to the three (3) sister bodies for fairness and transparency sake, and all NANS Coordinators will be given one (1) each to be operating within their zones.

“That, all the National Executives of NANS should eliminate the sense of entitlement, rooting for individuals to be beneficiaries, rather we advised them to focus on how to manage those buses that have been given to their respective secretariats and zones, after all, all National executives belong to one zone or the other.

“However all aggrieved member of the National Executives and that of Senate Arm should channel their grievances to the National President and Senate President respectively, we enjoin them to embrace peaceful discussion to settle the pressing issues amicably and off the media.

“We reaffirmed to the public that, the buses were shared in line with the tradition of NANS, to capture the interest of the structures and organs (Sister bodies & Zonal Coordinators) of the body (NANS).

“ Transparency of the leadership of NANS under Lucky Emonefe and Sen. Akinteye Babatunde is not only limited to the fairness distribution of CNG buses alone but extended to other palliative and good gestures coming directly from the Federal Government and other government agencies to the students’ community.

“The public should know that the trio (NAPS, NAUS & NANCES) are the highest critics of NANS National whenever their action or inaction is against the interest of Nigerian Students, but on the distribution of CNG buses and other palliatives, we must commend the current administration of NANS, they have done well and we are proud of their fairness distribution within the organs and structures of NANS.

“We appeal to other (National Excos) of NANS to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and settle their differences”.
