CIVIL engineers under the aegis of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Ibadan chapter, have stepped up a campaign against building collapse in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
Speaking during a walk against building and infrastructure collapse tagged:’Say No To Building Collapse, Build Right And Build Safe’ held on the premises of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Chairman, NICE, Ibadan chapter, Dr Adekunle Olaoye said: ”We are saying no to building collapse. It is not a disease, it is not a viral infection, it can be stopped
“Building collapse are manifestations of errors in the handiwork of man and it can be avoided. That is why we are advocating, telling people particularly the people of Ibadan today even all over Nigeria that while we are saying no to building collapse, engage the professionals.
“We are seven in the built environment namely: Architects, engineers, builders, land surveyors, quantity surveyors, town planners and the estate valuers. We are all there.
Also speaking at the event, National Chairman, NICE, Mr Tokunbo Ajanaku, said:”The menace of building and infrastructure collapse in Nigeria has become too frequent for our comfort. And as such, as professionals that are trained, knowledgeable and with the right capacity and the authority to build this infrastructure, we thought it proper to begin to speak up as part of a continuous series of advocacy to ensure that by the end of this year, every Nigerian must know, how to build and build right.”
