Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has stated that church weddings have no foundation in the scriptures, insisting that marriage in biblical times was a family affair, not a priestly one.
Omokri stated this on Tuesday via his Instagram page while responding to a follower who asked him to provide scriptural backing for his position on church weddings.
The controversy began after Omokri criticised young men who kneel to propose to their partners but fail to show the same honour to their mothers. An Instagram user with the handle @jimmy_x then challenged him to provide scriptural evidence for his stance.
In his reply, Omokri argued that even the word church does not exist in the original Greek Scriptures, but only appears in later translations. He added that every wedding recorded in the Bible took place at home because marriage was regarded as a family affair.
“Priests have absolutely no business with marriages. Because they want your money, they manipulate you by saying that Yeshua (Jesus) attended the wedding at Cana. Yes, He did. But as a guest, not as an officiating minister,” Omokri said.
He further claimed that the concept of the church as an institution for weddings originated in Europe, where it was initially a place of pagan worship before being adopted into Christianity.
