Rising 12-year-old music star Christiana Igbokwe has reawakened the spirit of her late grandmother, legendary Christy Essien-Igbokwe, in her latest single, “Ku Saura.” Featuring the King of Arewa Music, Ali Jita, the track serves as a tribute to the iconic “Lady of Songs” and carries a powerful message of peace and unity.
“Ku Saura” features a posthumous collaboration with Christy Essien-Igbokwe, blending her timeless voice with fresh elements that celebrate African musical heritage. According to Christiana, the song is meant to commemorate the Holy Month, encouraging people to set aside their differences, embrace forgiveness, and unite as one under God.
The young singer, who is set to release her debut album in November, expressed her excitement about recreating her grandmother’s hit song, “Ku Saura Re Ni.” From working with Goje players to collaborating with Ali Jita and even learning the Hausa language, Christiana describes the process as a “destined journey into history.”
Reflecting on the experience, Christiana shared, “It was such a peaceful adventure, and we could feel my grandma’s presence throughout the entire recording. Her spirit was with us.”
One of the key elements of the new single is the traditional northern Goje instrument, which holds deep significance for Christiana. She described the Goje as a spiritual and unique instrument, crafted from natural elements like snakeskin or lizard skin stretched over a gourd bowl, with suspended horsehair strings. “It’s equivalent to a violin, but its use is linked to the spirit world, carrying voices from or to the spiritual realm,” she explained. “No wonder we felt my grandma’s presence while making this song.”
