Rt. Hon. Chima E. Obieze has lauded the appointment of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC), describing it as a significant step toward addressing the developmental challenges facing the region.
The appointment was confirmed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session, signaling a renewed focus on tackling key socio-economic and environmental issues in the Southeast.
The Southeast Development Commission was established to drive sustainable development, rebuild critical infrastructure, and mitigate the effects of economic and environmental challenges that have long hindered growth in the region.
Hon. Chima Obieze expressed confidence in Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s ability to deliver on the commission’s mandate, citing his vast experience in governance and economic development.
“I have no doubt that under Senator Kalu’s leadership, theSoutheast Development Commission will make significant progress. His unwavering commitment to the advancement of Ndigbo and the entire Southeast is commendable. I urge him to remain steadfast in his mission to uplift the region,” Obieze stated.
Obieze is a three-time member of the Enugu House of Assembly and chairman House Committee on Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority
The Southeast Development Commission is tasked with accelerating infrastructure development, promoting economic growth, and addressing environmental challenges in the region.
Its core objectives include rehabilitating roads, bridges, and power supply, implementing erosion control measures to combat soil degradation, supporting local industries and job creation, addressing security concerns through collaboration with law enforcement, and investing in human capital development through education, healthcare, and vocational training.
The commission aims to create a stable and prosperous Southeast that fosters long-term development and economic opportunities for its people.
