Cervical cancer: Doctors offer free screening, treatment for 200 women in Zamfara

The Association of Women Medical Doctors in Zamfara has assured to provide free screening and treatment of 200 women with cervical cancer in the state.

This was disclosed on Thursday by the president of the Association of Women Medical Doctors, Zamfara, Dr Khadiza Mohammed Kanoma, to commemorate the cervical cancer awareness day in the state.

Dr. Khadiza Kanoma disclosed that each year, from the 1st to the 30 of January, it was set as a month for the cervical cancer awareness campaign.

While highlighting the level of cervical cancer, Dr Khadiza Kanoma explained that cervical cancer annually affects 14,000 women in the country.

“It would only appear after some years; I advised women to come for screening,” she urged.

“Cervical cancer is preventable 100%; if we find any woman positive through screening, it can be treated,” she said.

She revealed that cervical cancer mostly affects rural women and inaccessible areas.

According to her, women medical Doctors in Zamfara have planned to provide free screening and treatment of cervical cancer to over 200 women across the state from now to the end of January 2025.

“The free screening and treatment would be conducted at the Family Planning unit of the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Gusau, the state capital, with the support of the state government,” she disclosed.

Dr Khadiza Kanoma, therefore, called on local government council chairmen to compliment the efforts of the women medical Doctors and support women to attend screening for cervical cancer even beyond the day set for awareness campaign.
