Catholic priest sues for unity among journalists in Edo

Published by

A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Andrew Obinyan, on Wednesday, urged members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to be united in the fight for good governance and the security of the country.

Obinyan made the call at a prayer session organised by members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City.

The Catholic priest, who stressed the need for unity among members of the pen profession, noted that without unity, the responsibility to hold politicians and leaders in all spheres of human endeavours accountable would be a mirage.

According to him, “journalists have a very important role to play in nation-building. As the Fourth Estate of the Realm, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria empowers it to hold the government at all levels accountable to the people. For you to be able to perform this noble responsibility, members have to be united. The masses depend on you for good governance.”

The clergyman, however, lauded the leadership of the chapel for organising the prayer session, noting that without God, labour is in vain.

It would be recalled that various political interest groups and well-meaning Edo State indigenes at home and in the diaspora had in recent times called on the Catholic priest to contest for the 2024 governorship election in the state.

Earlier, Mrs. Nefishetu Yakubu, Chairman of the Chapel, said the prayer session was to offer thanks to God for His protection of her members since January.
