The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended Niger State Governor Umaru Bago for approving the reintroduction of Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) in public schools throughout the state.
In a statement from his Media Aide, Daniel Atori, the Chairman of the CAN Niger State chapter, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, praised the Governor as someone who genuinely cares for the people, regardless of their religious beliefs.
Governor Bago made these remarks when he received a delegation from the Christian community, led by the State CAN Executive and accompanied by the Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Mrs. Afiniki Dauda, at the Government House in Minna. He emphasized that turning to God and His teachings is essential for rebuilding family values.
The Governor explained that the introduction of CRK would help children grow with a respect for God. He stated, “The subject will be made compulsory for Christians in all public schools across the state because family values and morality have been replaced by social vices, leading to moral decay.”
In his commendation, Bishop Yohanna, who also serves as the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, noted that the Governor’s approval for reintroducing CRK in public schools will promote understanding of the faith and foster mutual respect.
“I commend the leadership style of our farmer Governor as he has demonstrated a commitment to fairness and inclusivity, regardless of religion or tribe. This approach has nurtured unity and a harmonious society among the diverse groups and religions in the state,” he declared.
Bishop Yohanna emphasized the necessity for concerted efforts from the government, parents, religious leaders, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a secure future for the youth.
