BRT-Train Accident: Victim recounts ordeal as trial resumes

A victim of the alleged collision between a Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and a moving train, Oluwajani Fayokemi, testified about her ordeal before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

She recounted how she was thrown to the side of the road when the BRT crashed into the train. Fayokemi also mentioned that she was fortunate to be alive, as the other occupants of the vehicle were not as lucky.

The accident resulted in significant damage to the BRT and the train.

Fayokemi testified that the driver, Osibanjo, was always cautious and drove within speed limits. She described him as a safe and professional driver.

When questioned about how many people were taken to LASUTH, she couldn’t recall the number.

Regarding her police statement after regaining consciousness, Fayokemi stated that the incident was still fresh in her mind. She was then asked to identify her statement to the police, where she mentioned that passengers heard the train’s horn and called out to the driver. She also noted that these details were not included in her written statement.

When asked about her seat on the bus, Fayokemi indicated she sat in the middle, specifically the second door on the first seat.

The defence counsel suggested that the driver should have been more affected because he was sitting in the front, but the prosecuting counsel objected.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala adjourned the matter to November 8. On May 2, she remanded the defendant, Osibanjo, in the Kirikiri custodial facility after arraignment.

Osibanjo pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge of involuntary manslaughter brought against him by the Lagos State Government.

The alleged offences contravene the provisions of Sections 244 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
