On Monday morning, a section of the Supreme Court was gutted by fire.
The fire incident started after the court staff resumed duty at about 8 a.m. it was gathered that the fire started from the Justices’ Chambers, specifically from chamber 5, on the fourth floor behind the main courtroom of the Supreme Court.
Witnesses at the court premises said it took the timely intervention of the court’s staff and the fire service station to put out the fire, with security personnel, including the police, seen ensuring the maintenance of law and order.
Chambers of the Justices are located behind the main Courtroom of the apex court complex.
The fire incident, which anonymous sources said started in Chamber 5 of the court, occupied by Justice Mohammed Saulawa, also touched two other offices.
Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that the fire incident resulted from an electric spark.
The fire, it was gathered, destroyed valuable documents and office furniture in the offices on the fourth floor of the Justices’ Chambers.
“The fire services responded swiftly. If not for their timely intervention, the situation would have been worse. The fire could have extended to other adjoining chambers and other parts of the complex. But the fire service came in quickly and immediately helped to put out the fire,” a court official who is not permitted to speak to the press on the matter said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Press and Information of the Supreme Court, Dr. Festus Akande, confirmed the fire incident but however said it was not as serious as speculated on social media platforms.
“Yes, there was a fire that perhaps resulted from an electrical fault in the section of a justice’s chambers of a justice of the court. But the fire is not as serious as they make it appear on social media. From what is being said on social media, it is as if someone went there and set the whole Supreme Court on fire; it is not so,” The apex court spokesman stated.
It would be recalled that the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Atiku had, last week filed appeals before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) which affirmed the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.
The lower court had, in its judgment held that the petitioners failed to prove the allegations contained in their petitions against Tinubu’s election.
However, the Supreme Court spokesman said the fire incident has nothing to do with the petitions filed Obi, Atiku and their parties against Tinubu’s elelection.
