The College of Management and Social Sciences at Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, has held a seminar on land acquisition and landlord/tenant relationships for members of the university community and residents of the host town.
The Provost of the College, Professor Olayinka Adenikinju, said the seminar was organised to educate the university community on challenges linked to land acquisition, which affect citizens and their properties across the country.
She explained that the programme also provided an opportunity to engage experts from different fields to keep participants informed about current practices and developments in the economy.
According to her, the guest speaker for the semester, Mr. Oladipo Olasope (SAN), was invited to share his expertise on land acquisition and landlord/tenant relations in Nigeria.
Professor Adenikinju said the college deliberately chose the theme, ‘Land Acquisition and Landlord/Tenancy Relationship’, because of the growing challenges surrounding land ownership and tenancy issues.
“The understanding of this subject is imperative for all members of society, as many individuals have fallen prey to fraudulent activities during the land acquisition process and in landlord/tenant relations. It is crucial for our community to familiarize itself with the current legal framework surrounding these matters,” she said.
She encouraged participants to reflect on the discussions and apply the knowledge gained when dealing with land and accommodation matters.
Also speaking, Associate Professor Olusola Olaosebikan described the seminar as an important avenue for engaging the university community on issues that require public awareness. He noted that the guest speaker advised participants to consult credible legal practitioners before engaging in land acquisition. He also thanked the university management for supporting the initiative.
In his presentation, the guest speaker, Oladipo Olasope (SAN), stressed the need to educate the public on land ownership and transactions in Nigeria. He explained that land plays a central role in the country’s social, economic and legal systems, serving as the foundation for agriculture, housing, investment and cultural heritage.
Mr. Olasope outlined key challenges associated with land matters, including overlapping tenure systems, administrative and legal bottlenecks, fraud, land disputes and competing interests among stakeholders. He noted that these issues affect buyers, sellers, investors, legal practitioners and policymakers.
He commended Bowen University for organising the seminar and advised students to stay informed about changes in legal provisions and land acquisition procedures.
Participants from the Iwo community described the seminar as useful to their professions and thanked the university for giving them the opportunity to attend.
