A high-powered delegation from Southern Borno Senatorial District, led by Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur and Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, on Tuesday, presented a cheque of N200 million to support the state government’s relief efforts.
The delegation, comprising Emirs, former Deputy Governors and stakeholders from nine local government areas, commiserated with Governor Babagana Zulum and the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi, over the devastating flood disaster that ravaged Maiduguri city.
Senator Ndume, who explained the rationale behind the donation, said it was in response to Governor Zulum’s appeal for assistance, with funds raised from individual donations through a dedicated account.
“We are here to identify with you and the good people of Borno State in this trying moment,” Kadafur said while presenting the cheque.
“This N200 million will support the state government’s flood relief efforts,” he added.
Kadafur also presented an additional N10 million cheque to the Shehu of Borno to support repairs and rebuilding efforts at the palace, which was also affected by the flood.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude for the donation and unity displayed by Southern Borno stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of unity in times of crisis.
The Shehu of Borno appreciated the Southern Borno people’s contributions and prayed for blessings upon them.
Other notable donations included N1.5 billion from Kano-based businessman Alhaji Aminu Al Hassan Dantata and N60 million from the Borno State House of Assembly led by Speaker Abdulkarim Lawan.
The flood disaster, triggered by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has left thousands dead, millions displaced and critical infrastructure destroyed.
